Why Your Bedroom Wall Is Damp — and How to Actually Fix It

Repainting a damp patch buys you one monsoon. Here is how to trace where the water is really coming from, and why the wall showing the stain is rarely the wall with the problem.

A damp patch is a symptom, not the problem. The wall you can see is where water is arriving — almost never where it is entering. This is why repainting a damp patch works for exactly one dry season and then reappears, slightly larger, the following July.

Start with the opposite face

Before anything else, look at what is on the other side of the affected wall. In NCR flats, the answer is usually one of four things, and each points to a different fix.

What is behind the wallMost likely causeWhat actually fixes it
A bathroomFailed floor membrane or leaking pipe chaseRe-waterproof the bathroom floor, not the bedroom wall
An external wallCracked plaster or failed exterior coatingExternal crack repair and weatherproof coating
The terrace abovePonding water, failed terrace membraneTerrace membrane with correct slope to drains
A kitchenLeaking supply line or sink wastePlumbing repair first — coating will not help

Reading the pattern

  • A patch that grows during monsoon and shrinks in summer points to rainwater — terrace or external wall.
  • A patch that stays constant year-round points to plumbing.
  • Damp rising from the skirting upward suggests it is travelling up from the floor slab.
  • A patch directly behind a bathroom wet area is almost always the bathroom floor membrane.
  • White powdery deposits mean salts are being carried through the masonry — the wall has been wet for a long time.

Choosing the right system

Waterproofing is not one product. Matching the system to the surface matters more than the brand on the tin.

SystemBest forTypical rate
Cementitious coatingBathrooms, water tanks, internal wet areas₹38 – ₹60 / sq.ft
Acrylic membraneTerraces with light foot traffic₹45 – ₹70 / sq.ft
Polyurethane (PU)Exposed terraces, high UV and movement₹65 – ₹95 / sq.ft
Injection groutingActive leaks through cracks in concretePriced per injection point

Timing matters

Terrace membranes need a dry, cured substrate. Applying one during monsoon is the single most common reason waterproofing fails — the coating cannot bond to a wet slab. Pre-monsoon slots across NCR book out through May for exactly this reason.

The sequence that works

  1. 1Inspect both faces of the wall and the plumbing chase.
  2. 2Identify and stop the source of water.
  3. 3Let the wall dry fully — this can take two to three weeks.
  4. 4Remove loose plaster back to sound masonry, then replaster.
  5. 5Prime, then repaint.

Skipping step three is why so many repairs fail. Paint applied to a wall that is still holding moisture will blister, no matter how good the paint.
