What a Good Painting Quote Should Include

Nine things that belong on any quote worth accepting — and what it means when they are missing.

Most disputes on painting jobs are not about quality. They are about a quote that was vague enough for two people to read it differently. A good quote removes that ambiguity before any work starts.

The nine items

  1. 1Measured wall area in square feet — so you can check the arithmetic.
  2. 2Rate per square foot — so you can compare against another quote.
  3. 3Paint brand and exact product name — not just "premium emulsion".
  4. 4Number of coats, stated explicitly.
  5. 5Preparation stages listed individually: sanding, crack filling, putty, primer.
  6. 6What masking and covering is included.
  7. 7Timeline in working days, and which rooms in what order.
  8. 8Payment stages — advance, milestones, balance on completion.
  9. 9What happens if hidden damage is found once work starts.

Reasonable payment terms

A booking advance to confirm dates is normal. Full payment up front is not. A typical structure is an advance to secure the slot and buy materials, a milestone payment partway through, and the balance after a joint walkthrough where you can point out anything that needs fixing.

Get a second quote

We actively encourage it. Comparison only helps if both quotes list the same preparation stages — otherwise you are comparing a full job against a smaller one that happens to have a smaller number attached.
